#38 It’s often said that as Christians we should trust in God’s provision but what Does that mean? How does God provide that provision? Do I need to work and earn the money or does it kinda just fall from heaven?
Thank you for your question, I liked the way you worded it.
Yes, we should trust in God's provision. He provides all the resources of our blessings (i.e. rain, sunshine, productivity for growth, economic blessings).
Also just as important, we should give thanks and live a life of thanksgiving. Many times I will walk in the supermarket, and just pause to give God thanks for the abundance He has provided. I hope you will do the same.
Now your question about waiting for 'manna' to fall from heaven. No, we should not just sit around and do nothing. I don't believe the old saying: "God helps those who help themselves". Yet, I see many places in the Bible where we are admonished to work with our hands.
Part of God's provision for us is our health, intelligence, tenacity, patience, determination, talents, etc. which enable you and me to make a living, and by doing so provide for us and our families' needs. An individual who will not work will find they will work in less honorable 'trades'. Work fulfills in us a sense of duty, meaning of life, and responsibility which is also a God given passion within us.
Let me give a few points here:
1. In Genesis 2:9-15; God created Eden and placed the man and woman there. He told man in 2:15 "Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend (or cultivate) and keep it." The first assignment God gave man was to work for what he is to eat. It gave him purpose and responsibility.
2. In 2 Thessalonians 3:10; Paul confronts those who only wanted to 'live off the generosity' of others, "For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat."
3. 2 Thessalonians 3:11; "For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies." When one doesn't work, they involve themselves in other activities which can lead to sin and disorder (look at what's happening in America today).
1 Timothy 5:13 "And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not."
4. God condemns laziness:
Proverbs 15:19 "The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, but the way of the upright is a highway."
Proverbs 19:24 "A lazy man buries his hand in his bowl, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again."
Proverbs 22:13 "The lazy man says, "There is a lion outside! I shall be slain in the streets!"
These are only a few verses, I encourage you to do a word study for the word 'lazy' and you will see many other meanings.
In summary, I like to say, that 'yes', God does (He has for me) rain down blessings from heaven on His people, but the receiving of those blessings is in conjunction with our obedience to His Word. So, if you seek to work and provide for your family, PRAY asking God's direction, and acknowledging His provision with thankfulness, I believe you will begin to see many provisions of God you haven't noticed before.
